Industry changes and new career avenues

In today’s rapidly evolving industry, we’re witnessing significant changes as younger generations enter the workforce, bringing fresh perspectives and tech-savvy communication styles. This shift presents both challenges and opportunities as we navigate the widening generational gap...

In recent years, the landscape of our industry has undergone significant changes, prompting many of our colleagues to explore new career avenues amid. I am in the position of recruiting and training individuals from diverse backgrounds and, notably, a much, much younger demographic.

According to projections by the World Economic Forum, Generation Z (Gen Z) is set to constitute 27% of the workforce by 2025. This figure will inevitably rise as our more experienced colleagues transition into retirement or pursue new career paths.

Considering the projections, it’s no surprise that fresh, young talent are joining our workforce. Yet, this trend isn’t just about onboarding new individuals or those switching career paths. It presents a unique challenge—the generational gap is widening, and it’s hard to ignore. So the question remains, what can we do to help with these Industry changes and new career avenues?

Navigating the digital era is second nature to the new generation. They’re tech-savvy, and let’s face it: their way of communicating can be a whole different ball game. Their use of slang and informal channels might leave some of us scratching our heads.

Now, let’s put those stereotypes to rest. This generation isn’t just here to clock in; they’re driven and ready to bring their unique perspective to the table.

This reality hit home for me during a recent chat with our newest team member; she is 23. Coming from a customer service background, she swears by instant messaging apps for efficiency. (Imagine my surprise when she told me she didn’t have an email app on her phone!) However, our team was used to a more formal approach. There were a few raised eyebrows at what we considered not only an informality but an unprofessional style. But, even when there are “normal” ways of doing things, these young team members will run the industry soon enough. We better update ourselves on the ways to effectively reach them while introducing them to a part of our “old ways.”
